Job Update
There’s really nothing new to report. I’m still looking. I haven’t sent a resume yet, but this over at Touchstone looks interesting. I don’t think we would be up to moving to Chicago, but, who knows, maybe they would be interested in a telecommuted position.
I have been thinking through as many options as I can. Because of St. Matthews and more options in the graphic design field, Birmingham is our focus for looking. However, I keep wondering if I could make a go of it doing freelance full-time. I just don’t know about handling insurance. Anybody got any ideas?
Having my own design firm has always been a dream of mine. It’s more like a day-dream instead of a goal. All those years looking through Communication Arts and How, seeing the articles on design firms has instilled the desire.
Other than that, my top pick would be to get on at Southern Progress. If you are not familiar with them, they do Southern Living, Cooking Light, Coastal Living, Southern Accents. They are a Time-Warner company now. I think they’ve been one for about 10 years. And they are in Birmingham. I know a few people who work there. I’m hoping something opens up.
And if you want to start talking about day-dreaming about jobs, my ultimate dream/goal would be to open a coffee-house/pub (in the English sense). That would probably need to be a retirement project.

I saw that Touchstone posting.
I'm not sure why Touchstone is insisting that the candidate must move to or live in Chicago.
You could do that job, and do it well, right there in Birmingham.
This is the internet age. Location becomes less and less of a factor in these decisions.
Look at the Anglican Communion, for example. Lots of people are still clinging to geographical solutions to problems of faithfulness. This is a mistake, and IMHO, a waste of resources. Geography is much less important today than it was 5 years ago. Hence "flying bishops", &c.
Community of purpose is more important now than communities based on geography. In some ways, I think that's sad, but the old concept of the parish church or geographical diocese is dead.
I think you are on target.
Now I just have to finish that cover letter. I loathe cover letters.
