Luwak Coffee

As some of you know I’m a coffee-geek/snob. I get extremely frustrated by the lack of decent coffee in Tuscaloosa. Even with a handful of “coffee shops” in the area, with one that actually roasts their own beans, I’ve yet to find one that has good coffee (Crimson Cafe, I’m looking at you.).

It’s called Luwak coffee because it has passed through the digestive system of the cat-like relative of the mongoose, the luwak.

Anyway, I digress.

Over the years of enjoying various varietals from around the world, I keep hearing about one coffee. The most expensive coffee. More expensive that Jamaica Blue Mountain. It can cost up to $10 a gram. It’s called Luwak coffee because it has passed through the digestive system of the cat-like relative of the mongoose, the luwak.

You might find this article by Dave Barry a better description of the coffee (well, at least a more humorous description).

I have not had it (and do not plan to). I’ve heard coffee roasters that I respect say that it really is over-rated. After running across this website recently, I have decided for certain that I do not want to try it. I’ve included this photo as a link so that you can see exactly why I never want to try it (be forwarned, I have made it a link for a reason).
