football fever

I admit it, I am not a big fan of football. Which is odd living in Tuscaloosa. Now the only times I loathe it are times like this evening (and probably through the rest of the weekend) when it has traffic backed up much more horribly than usual. I actually saw a few of the huge motor homes pulling Yukon-sized vehicles behind them (and they were probably heading in from their homes in Northport). It does bug me the life-altering problems it causes for people. I remember being at a friend’s wedding many years ago, and they were actually concerned that one of his groomsmen would not come into the church for the wedding. He was listening to the game. People that is a problem somewhere close to alchoholism. Not to mention that college football programs seem to be almost as corrupt as a southern politician.

And it is the main religion of this town. I’ve thought before that if I were ever involved in a church plant in Tuscaloosa, you sure couldn’t name it St. Paul’s. You would have people thinking Yeah Alabama was played for the call to worship.

I really don’t think I would have any negative reaction to football if there weren’t the omni-present opposite force in this city. You can about guarantee when I have to talk to a sales person from out of town and they find out I live in Tuscaloosa that there will be some type of football related question.

Ah well, it feels better to vent. Maybe it will help relieve the frustration before I have to head through the traffic again tomorrow. I’m not sure what I’ll be doing on Saturday, but it certainly won’t include watching a football game.

Yet another reason we are friends!

I love college football, but his place is absolutely insane.

I could go on a tear here, as you well know. Let me limit myself to one object lesson & I'll hush.

The letters to the editor page of the Tuscaloosa News is one of the most disgraceful things I've seen. Almost without exception, the letters printed between late July and January are overwhelmingly about 'the team'. In the other months, only a half to a third are about football.

I have lived here all my life and I still don't understand it.

Yeah, sometimes I think the winning football games is the best thing that could happen to this town and the worst thing at the same time.

I like the redesign, by the way.

I'll just add a hearty Amen and leave it there. (There will be another game in town tomorrow--Gracen's soccer game. Go Zips!)
