St Augustine Quote

I’ve been listening through the audiobook for Garry Wills’ book St. Augustine. The physical book is pretty short, about 145 pages. The audio book is only 4 tapes. Nice for driving back and forth to work. Anyway, I heard this quote of Augustine tonight:

The word in my mind exists before it is put into language. I search for the right sound to carry it abroad. I need a way for it to reach you without leaving me. And even now you are hearing what I have in my heart, and it is yours. It is in both of us, and you are now possessing it without my losing it. And just as my word had to take on sound in order to be heard, so God’s word took on flesh in order to be seen.
